Ubertec solution!

August 2, 2008 · Leave a Comment

We have a solution! The guys at Ubertec in Parnell saved the day with a solution that let me use the gmail SMTP renamed to my work SMTP and it works with both 3G and wifi.

I’ll post instructions soon :-)

emailing on the run

August 2, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Anyway, back to the iPhone ownership.

I’ve had this thing for 20 days now. For the first 10 days I didn’t try to send email via 3G b/c I didn’t need to as WiFi was working a treat. Then on the way home one day i try sending a reply to a mate Mike, but it doesn’t work and I get a warning saying “incorrect address for one of the recipients” !

Nah, I think, can’t be, same address as normal. Tried it several times but still no go. So I complain to Carly my lovely wife :-) Then I do the next best thing and jump onto Geekzone and ask the question “sending mail issues” and get these replies what a mess, nobody really seemed to know other than johnr.

ok, so I go to the VF page suggested by someone and all goes well.

That is until today, NO GO, same thing again, NO 3G sending. So I ring a VF iPhone support person who says “you have to call xtra” I say “but doesn’t the mail go through VF on the 3G b/c of something to do with not being able to use xtra?” he says no, don’t know, know nothing and nobody else has had the issue, anyways, very unfriendly and unhelpful. VF service basically really sucks, they are really bad.

So I ring xtra, lovely lady there, I tried all she suggested but got nowhere.
So I call apple, no suggestions, they say “call xtra”

So I go onto the VF NZ site and find this pdf for settings for phones. Doesn’t work for both wifi and 3G for whatever reason.

Stuck and stumped. I really find it absurd that Vodafone, Telecom and Apple don’t really know what they are doing with this problem. Their helpdesk people don’t seem very well informed.

MobileMe

July 28, 2008 · Leave a Comment

The MobileMe service is available at Me.com and will sell for $140 a year, with a 60 day free trial.  If you’re wondering what happens to .Mac, current customers can migrate at will, but .Mac will be replaced completely by MobileMe eventually.

There’s a guided tour available but you can get a pretty good idea of how it works by checking out the live blogs. Another benefit to the service is that the web-based component looks and feels like a real application. So, you could conceivably just play on the web version and enjoy mobility with the iPhone or iPod Touch.

I have it and love the hook up despite some of the troubles some have mentioned around the web, it is working fine for me now.

WordPress for iPhone

July 28, 2008 · Leave a Comment

How’s this! I’m blogging on my 3G iPhone right now using the “wordpress” iPhone software I got from the app store today! go you guys.

Gotta love this phone man.

WordPress users rejoice! WordPress for iPhone is now available from the iTunes store for free!
You can read more about the application here.

This app allows you to manage several blogs, create and edit posts and even upload photos to your blog directly from your iPhone. This is a strong competitor to TypePad’s offering, especially since WordPress is free, though they do appear very similar. The one function WordPress for iPhone does this is unique is the ability to preview a post. Check out the gallery below!

Grab it.

I got one!

July 27, 2008 · 2 Comments

We actually went to have a look at people queuing outside the Queen st store and it was quite neat. Vodafone were giving away hats, icecreams and other paraphernalia.

So, I buy this iPhone from the Silvia Park store, which I love using and I consider it the best PDA I’ve had so far.

Here is the list: Apache, i-mate JAM, Palm 750v, Blackberry Curve and now the iPhone.
